The Last Draft

In a grand house suspended somewhere outside of time, a man has been murdered. No one can leave. Everyone becomes a suspect. Eyes meet, accusations fly, interrogations begin.

But this is not just a crime story.

On stage, an author attempts to write his play live in front of us. He hesitates, starts over, assigns roles, reshapes his characters as inspiration strikes. The actors shift between parts, costumes, and identities. We witness  the very creation of the story, as if the audience had been invited inside the mind of its creator.

At first, everything seems perfectly controlled: immaculate silhouettes, rigid hairstyles, polished smiles. An elegant, orderly world, almost suffocating.

Then the façade begins to crack.

Masks fall. Hair comes undone. The characters slowly begin to break free from the roles imposed upon them. Beneath the thriller and the dark comedy emerges a rebellion against clichés, fantasies, and the outdated visions of an author no longer capable of controlling his own creations. At times, he accompanies the story on the piano, like a conductor desperately trying to maintain control over the chaos he himself has unleashed.

Who is really leading the investigation? Who is still writing the story? And above all: what happens when characters suddenly refuse to play the roles they were given?

Blending crime fiction, social satire, and dark comedy, The Last Draft is a production of Paillette Theater Berlin, blurring the boundaries between author and character, fiction and rebellion.
